Dr Bach and His Flower Remedies

Healing with the clean, pure, beautiful, agents of nature is surely the one method of all which appeals to most of us”
Dr Edward Bach

Who was Dr Bach and what is his flower system of emotional healing?

Dr. Edward Bach was born in 1886 and grew up in the West Midlands, UK. Initially he worked in his father’s brass foundry before following his calling to become a doctor and surgeon. In 1912 he graduated and went on to not only become a doctor but also an esteemed immunologist, bacteriologist and to have his own Harley Street London practice.

During this time and after years of research he discovered that it was essential to “treat the person not the disease”. He believed that when our emotions, feelings and thoughts are out of balance it has a negative impact on our immunity and physical health.

He established that by addressing our emotions we can return to not only a peaceful state of mind and a calm nervous system but also to general holistic well being.

During his studies he worked at the homeopathic hospital. He was very interested to discover that the founder of homeopathy -

Dr Hahnemann mirrored his own principle that:

The mental condition of the patient is often of far greater importance than his physical state in influencing the development of his illness” Dr Samuel Hahnemann

So in 1930 Dr Bach gave up his successful medical career, moved to the countryside and began work on creating a pure, natural and gentle system of medicine that focused solely on rebalancing our emotions.

He wanted it to be simple enough that it could be a self help system of healing - one that could be used by everyone and on every living thing - including plants and animals.

Dr Bach was extremely intuitive and observed that every flower has its own unique subtle energy and ability to rebalance individual emotions and states of mind, as well as being able to work in harmony when blended together.

He found the majority of his flowers growing wild in the fields of the countryside.

By the time of Dr Bach’s death in 1936 his work was done and his complete, natural, gentle and safe system of healing was being used successfully around the world. Today its popularity continues to grow extensively and is used by millions of people globally.

How are the Bach Flowers made?

Making the flower remedies is a simple process and available to almost everyone.

The Bach Centre explains the process below:

“Bach flower remedies are made by soaking flowers in water and then exposing the mixture to sunlight or by using a boiling method. The liquid is then filtered and preserved with brandy.

Dr. Bach devised the sun method for certain plants – mostly the more delicate flowers. The sun method involves floating the flower heads in pure water for three hours whilst in direct sunlight.

And for other remedies – mostly the woodier plants and those that bloom when the sun is weak – he created the boiling method in which a remedy maker boils the flowering parts of the plant for half an hour in pure water.

In both cases the heat transfers energy of the flowers to the water.  The energised water is then filtered and an equal quantity of brandy is added to it as a preservative.  This creates the mother tincture.

Mother tincture is then further diluted at a ratio of two drops to every 30 ml to make the stock bottles that you see in shops.”
